One way to re-boot a board, is to perform the equivalent of office cleaning and a three week vacation away from phones and computer screens for an individual. On occasion, please consider an informal approach to assessment and annual retreats. Let’s call this the individual renewal retreat. Following is a starter concept. Encourage your board to skip a regularly planned business meeting and to re-program the following meeting as a development session (OK, you can process a consent agenda for 10 minutes if you must!). Each board member has the same assignment: think about the basic things that the board needs to do how to, at least temporarily, clear away the clutter of legacy concerns and les strategic details that have been clogging the thought space of board members. When the next meeting occurs, the chair facilitates a sort of brainstorming session. Members are asked to contribute items to throw away or clean up , so the board’s thought space is clean, stripped down to essentials. Now the board has the space and energy to look forward. What are the best things to do with the cleared space? How can the work of the board, its “furniture” be rearranged for greater productivity? What are the new things that are needed, I terms of assignments, goals, procedures, so that the board can do more to help the organization in the coming year? Be sure and conduct a mini-assessment of this new activity before adjourning: was this valuable for members and how can it be improved the next time?
