A common complaint I hear is that there is not enough time for board members to do their work.

A common complaint I hear is that there is not enough time for board members to do their work.  They don't see how they can serve on committees or work groups, much less commit to individual assignments such as establishing and strengthening relationships with key stakeholders. Upon closer inspection, it is frequently the case that boards are meeting monthly or (gulp, as I heard two days ago) even TWICE  PER WEEK !!!

I know you know where this is going but, let's state the obvious:  you don't need to meet as a full board all that often on a regular basis, especially if you use consent agendas and email/telephone effectively.  By meeting every two to three months as a full board, you have suddenly freed up several hours per month for committees to meet and for individual assignments to be completed.  Try it, you'll like it !!!
