September 1, 2008: Trustee tryouts? PDF Print E-mail

Much more innovation is possible as part of the screening work in trustee recruitment.  There are many ways to find out if a potential member has the right stuff to actually serve and take up a precious slot on especially minimally sized boards.  In addition to requesting that potential members serve on work groups or committees, why not create other types of trial periods or even tryouts?  What form could these mechanisms take?

One method being tried throughout parts of the U.S. with some success is the concept of a board fellow, usually a graduate student, who tries on the role of trustee doing an academic school year of nine months.  Another method might be to actually let several potential board members compete, as with currently popular reality television shows.  Perhaps a group of related nonprofits, such as environmental protection, arts or human services, could create a shared academy or assessment center for board members in addition to existing matching services.

When you think about it, there seem to be many alternatives to the standard approach of desperately seeking slot-fillers that frequently creates a state of instant disappointment that all parties feel compelled to tolerate for at least one entire term of service.
