It is the time of year for elections in many organizations.  When there are no other leadership candidates prepared, leaders may feel they must continue for the good of the board.  But what if they are tired in their organizational work and can barely keep up, let alone get out in front and inspire others to perform?  Here are a couple of approaches to dealing with burn out.  First, don’t let it happen.  Following is a classic list of preventive measures all boards should take.

Insure that no board member is overworked; make sure every board member has a job; insure rotate assignments; enforce term limits, continually refresh board; train and develop board members; make work interesting, meetings meaningful; do what is needed but only as much as can be supported; and watch for signs of stress, counsel the afflicted.

But what if you are the one afflicted?  Get perspective.  Go visit an old friend (or two), one not connected to your board service.  Tell him/her your situation.  Ask them how they would go about finding newness and energy, and to create an exit strategy.  They know you, care about you and can help you think through strategy.  There are always alternatives and new ways to look at your situation but being your own mirror and adviser is the toughest task.  Find a way forward if at all possible.  The organization needs you but your well being must be preserved.
