Well, I could have said "it's the relationship, s**pid!!!"
It is not just in fund raising but in all the outcomes that we seek for our
organizations and even ourselves. We all nod when we hear yet another
FATCOW (flying around the country offering wisdom) presenter that we have paid
good money for say it but effective relationships cannot usually be
thrown together overnight. Whether it is a big donor, a sought-after
board member candidate, a supportive government official, or a helpful
foundation program officer, cultivation or learning to "tango", if
you will, takes time. Unfortunately, we still beat up our board members, our staff members and other colleagues because they can't pull rabbits out of hats on cue for us or otherwise make extraordinary results occur just because we desperately want/need them NOW. We somehow continue, despite the apparent evidence to the contrary, to just expect people to know what we want from them and to do what we want them to do without any significant effort on our part. If time (intention and a lot of elbow grease as well) were not required to establish relationships, then don't you think we could inherit them from previous organization leaders or at least buy them online by now? Ouch, that was painful. Let's shake it off and get out there, designing/building the relationships we require for the success we desire!
