May 1, 2008: It All Starts with a List PDF Print E-mail

A frequent mishap occurs, especially in smaller and single funding source dependent organizations, when E.D.'s and trustees jump into fund raising or at least get anxious and frustrated failing to do effective fund raising, because they don't  do first things first. Without going over the whole psychology of giving and other devices, let's just say that even without a development staff position, great progress can be made on the awareness raising front.  How does the community you seek to reach (and eventually raise funds from) understand the value that your organization provides?  By your telling them so:  communication!

And so, it all does start with a list.  Whom would you like to appreciate better the great things that your organization is doing?  It should rapidly become a fairly large list, which, nowadays, we put into a spreadsheet or even a database.  Yes, this is your list for your e-newsletters, your press releases, and eventually your annual giving letter and even a starting point for prospecting for major gifts.  Oh, and don't forget to put in all of the people you and everybody else on the board and staff knows that may be remotely interested in seeing the evidence of how good you are at doing good.  Be creative and expansive, break out of the box and don't hold back!!!
