A great pointer for start-up organizations bears repeating for existing organizations.  Give yourself a leg up on the competition when you recruit trustees.  Make sure that a majority of your board members not only represent key stakeholder groups but can actually direct staff to the communication channels of those groups.

Yes, this is a reminder about that vague-sounding "ambassador" role.  Recruit board members who can actually transmit the identity and value of the organization to many other opinion leaders, potential supporters and funding source influencers.  Make this a layer in the profile of ALL board members, in addition to their demographic and skill characteristics and you have gone a long way to dramatically amplify the limited message broadcasting capacity of staff.  In these lean times, you can't have too many people hearing your message.
