March 1, 2009: Honorable Discharge for All PDF Print E-mail

No matter the actual level of performance, ALL members serving on a board deserve recognition for their board service.  If they didn’t do a lot, it is not completely their fault and, they shared in   the responsibility and accountability for organizational outcomes whatever their level of involvement.  Make sure all members leaving in good standing receive:  a letter from the chair, a certificate of service (plaque if that is the custom), mention in the print or enewsletter and notation of completion of service in board minutes.  If in attendance at a last business meeting, make sure they get a round of applause.

If possible, it is great to tie board service conclusion announcements to a publicly visible event, such as at an annual meeting, volunteer recognition event, fund raiser or other suitable outreach activity.  Be creative and laudatory in whatever departure process is used.  It may be that a trustee does more as an ambassador, donor or special chores designate after their official term of service has concluded.  Sometimes board members don’t “get it” until they are off the board.
