Leadership is distributed in a high performing board. Yet most of those sitting at the top of the small board pyramid need to make a conscious strong effort to encourage others to use power.  Even those who employ the traditional domineering style of chairpersonship usually wish fervently for others to take a chunk of responsibility toward improving board outcomes, using the authority that they need to deliver.

Although most humans have at least some leadership bones in their body, most need nurturing to bring forth and manifest their potential for guiding others.  At this time of year, it is appropriate to make a new beginning:  to consciously scheme and act to distribute power, nurturing the next couple of generations of leadership within a board.  A leader who wants to give a great gift, would do well to make an extra effort  now to insure that the strength of governance can grow into the future.  Ask members to step up, managing committees, work groups, special relationships and other key assignments.  Power will be shared, the board will be stronger and the organization being governed will truly be more sustainable.
