Congratulations on your successful retreat! Decisions were made, people bonded and the motivational fires were stoked. Now what? I would like to share two ideas here. First, make sure somebody is assigned to make sure that the follow up plan is clear and that it happens. It helps to set up a small action plan: associate a lead and support person(s), a deliverable and a time frame for each task. Think about how board members can support each other with these tasks, how the action can be shared among a pair or within a small team and how staff members can help support these doers to be successful. Second, remember that you don’t have to wait until a retreat to talk about what to do differently to get improved outcomes. Strategic thinking can occur at every board meeting and many committee meetings. Realize that raising expectations unrealistically high for a special meeting that happens only once per year can be problematic in and of itself. Great leaps forward in board performance are difficult to force. Incrementally and gently developing and implementing action plans may actually work better in stimulating greater performance. Isn’t taking baby steps in the right direction is better than beating yourself (or fellow board members) up over failure to institute dramatic change and then giving up until next year’s retreat?
