Yes, it's stormy out here in the economy, for all of us. It's hard to
tell what is certain, what we can actually control, whom we can trust.
But, the mission remains and, if the doors are still opens, the board needs to
govern. Now is a great time to build confidence within the staff and
within the external stakeholder community. Act as if your decisions can
make a difference and build a self-fulfilling prophecy. Yes, you should
have done it in calmer times but now the organization’s future depends upon it.
Use the uncertainty to your advantage. Ask yourself: what
would we do if we could control the future? What are the underlying
conditions that we need to address? What would be the best things to do
in that situation? Guess what? Things aren't all that different,
you're just afraid things might get a lot more different. Set the
best course and support the staff in making it happen. It's no time for
trustees to slack off on their end. Hang in there. The storm will
pass. It always does. Take this approach and when the weather
clears, you will be closer to your destination than if you gave in to giving up
when the storm started.
