A recent request for training services reminded me that, in our haste to strengthen boards, we frequently give short shrift to the positive.

Most efforts focus on what is missing and how to strengthen fund raising, promotional and oversight capability of boards. It is dangerous to assume that it is easy for boards to self-assess. In hindsight, I believe that I should have been offering more comprehensive tools to help boards to map the internal assets of individual board members in descriptive dimensions that could be rated and combined into total scores. Thoughtful and thorough Board Asset Mapping (BAM) is now my preferred first step in membership and recruitment technical assistance. Only with agreement on existing assets can there be meaningful prioritization of which additional assets are needed to create an effective dream team.
