How do you dust off a Board? First, do a head count: do you have enough well-intentioned, skilled and motivated brains in attendance at the full board meetings? Do you have enough brains in residence to serve on needed committees and carry out additional priority assignments? If not, think about a recruitment plan and assign that task to one of the committees. Second, check to see if there is a bar set for board member performance: do you have a contract or agreement that each member signs that covers their role? Did you all look at it recently? Is the bar set high enough? If not, think about a performance contract. Third, how is that board development plan going: does it need to be adjusted to tie into the strategic direction of the organization? Do you have a plan or strategy or some kind of documented approach to systematically improving board activity? If not, time to develop that development plan! Fourth, what about direction for that development plan: what issues were raised in your last board self-assessment? Is it clear what areas required the most attention? Did you remember to do a self-assessment in 2009? If not, your patient is way overdue for a check-up. Fifth, take a seat, take a deep breath and relax those necks and shoulders. Congratulations, you’ve dusted off your board. Now that you are clean and restored, it’s time to get back to work!
