Board members seem to continually lose sight of the strategic importance of
strengthening their own team as a top priority. A weak team cannot bring
the organization what it needs from a board. And yet, training is always
postponed because "we don't have enough members" or "we don't
have enough new members" or "we don't have a plan yet" or “we
need to wait for the new officers.” The
point is, unless you have 9-15 completely perfect (extremely powerful,
connected, motivated and active)
members, you have not ever completed your mission in building the capacity of
the team through training and exercise. However, there is an even worse "sin" in board work...and that is to waste the training by not converting increased capacity into increased action. Then, you have truly wasted time and effort, unnecessarily raising expectations and causing significant and unnecessary disappointment among both staff AND board. Without increased capacity, without training and other appropriate preparation and support, your board will never, yes, can NOT produce more and better outcomes. And if you cannot equip trustees to produce better outcomes, is it really fair to expect more from them, let alone rely upon them to take your organization to a new level?
